Survey Shows Most Koreans Oppose Yoon's Plan For Ending Dispute With Japan
SOUTH KOREA
Yonhap News Agency reports that almost 60% of respondents in a Gallup Korea opinion poll were critical of President Yoon Suk-yeol's compromise solution to South Korea's historical spat with Japan, highlighting the domestic backlash against the plan.
- Yoon proposed that the victims of Japan's wartime forced labour will be compensated by a domestic foundation supported by South Korean businesses, without any involvement of Japanese companies which used forced labour during the war but now insist that they have settled all claims.
- The plan resulted in a diplomatic breakthrough but has come under criticism from advocacy groups for the victims of forced labour and opposition parties. In the Gallup Korea poll, 64% of people said that there is no rush to repair ties with Japan, while 85% said that Japan has not repented for its war crimes.
