Sweden-Finland Power Flows to Be Curtailed This Summer on Works

POWER

Construction works and maintenance on transmission lines will reduce the electricity cross border capacity between Sweden and Finland this summer, Fingrid said in a statement.

  • Works will be carried out on transmission lines in northern Sweden in early summer, which will reduce flows from Finland to Sweden to 300MW, usually 1.1GW, and from Sweden to Finland to 200MW, usually 1.2GW.
  • Disruptions are expected to take three weeks.
  • A similar restriction will be repeated in July and August, when the construction work of the Aurora Line transmission line will continue with an interruption of around four weeks.
  • The Aurora Line is scheduled to be completed in 2025 and will significantly increase transmission capacity between Finland and Sweden.
  • In addition, there will be several outages in Ostrobothnia during the summer because of construction works to improve the main grid, during which the maximum production of wind power will be regionally limited to a maximum of 2GW due to system security.
