Swiss Hydro Stocks Narrow Surplus to 5-Year Average

Swiss hydropower reserves fell by four percentage points last week to 74.8% of capacity as of 11 December, narrowing the surplus over the five-year and long-term averages, BFE data showed.

  • Stocks narrowed the surplus over the five-year average to 4 percentage points, down from 4.8 points the week earlier.
  • The surplus to the long-term average since 1997 narrowed to 8.6 points, down from 9 points the week prior.
  • Hydropower output in Switzerland declined last week. Output from reservoirs fell by 481.9MW on the week to 1.66GW. Pumped storage production stood at 1.033GW last week, down from 1.266GW the week before, Entso-E data showed.
  • Weather forecasts in Sion, the hydro-intensive canton of Valais, are suggesting some precipitation for this week. However temperatures are forecast to fall below zero overnight which could limit inflows into reserves for the rest of the week.
