Switzerland Considering 15% Gas Cut

Switzerland may align with the rest of the EU and reduce gas use by 15% this winter according to Energy Minister Simonetta over the weekend.

  • Asked about Switzerland joining the measures, she said "That would certainly make sense. The Federal Council will decide."
  • Switzerland has relatively low demand for gas, which covers around 15% of total energy consumption but it was reliant on around half of its gas imports coming from Russia in recent years.
  • There are no large natural gas storage facilities in Switzerland, but company Gaznat has a stake in an underground gas storage facility near Lyon in France.
