Taiwan Dollar Best Performer In Asia

A fairly benign session for the Taiwan dollar, USD/TWD last down 0.168 at 28.137 and in a tight range since early in the session. TWD is the best performer in Asia, one of the few currencies posting gains against the US dollar. The pair is close to cycle lows of 28.125 hit on Dec 17.

  • Risk assets have taken a knock as markets digest news from the UK of the Covid-19 situation in the UK/Brexit dynamics, as well as a resurgence of cases in several Asia-Pac countries.
  • US dollar is slightly stronger despite reports that negotiators in congress have reached a deal for a spending plan, though the announcement was tempered by conditions from both sides and the caveat that no deal will be signed until tomorrow evening.
  • Tensions continue to escalate in Taiwan after a Chinese aircraft carrier sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Sunday. Taiwan reportedly monitored the ship and dispatched vessels for surveillance. China has accused the US of deliberately causing friction in the region after a US missile destroyer sailed through the Taiwain Strait.
  • Export orders from Taiwan are due at 0800GMT/1600CST. The data are expected to show export orders rose at 14.3% November, which would be the fastest pace since 2018. Later in the week sees the release of unemployment data (Dec 22) and industrial production (Dec 23).
