Tanker Values Surge as Global Oil Flows Reroute

The price of oil tankers surged following the Russia/Ukraine war with the rerouting of global petroleum flows.

  • Shipments are taking much longer journeys after the EU ban on seaborne Russia crude with flows diverted to China and India instead.
  • The asset prices of all the main long distance oil tankers increase by around 50% since the middle of last year, according to data from VesselsValue.
  • “The values are likely to stay strong in the short term as Russia is still at war,” said senior analyst Rebecca Galanopoulos Jones.
  • Last year, 22 VLCCs were bought by unidentified entities, up from six a year earlier, VesselsValue data show.
