TASS-Russia & Belarus Sign Agreement On Tactical Nuke Deployment

RUSSIA

Russian state-run TASS reported earlier that Russia and Belarus have signed an agreement on the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons on Belarusian territory. Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu stated that the decision was a retaliatory measure 'in the face of an extremely sharp escalation of threats and the activity of NATO's joint nuclear missions'. Shoigu stated that “Russia [is] not transferring nuclear weapons to the Republic of Belarus: the control of them and the decision on their use rests with the Russian side,”

  • Prior to the announcement of the agreement signing, Shoigu issued warnings to Ukraine following the incursion of pro-Ukrainian Russian paramilitary groups into the Belgorod Oblast on the Ukrainian border. Shoigu stated that "We will continue to respond to such actions by Ukrainian militants promptly and extremely harshly," claiming that "more than 70 Ukrainian nationalists" were killed and the rest pushed back.
