Tass: Russia To Send Army Units To Belarus For Drills

RUSSIA

Russian state news outlet Tass reporting that army units are to be sent to Belarus for training drills.

  • The move comes as Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya meets key individuals in the Biden administration and Congress in an attempt to encourage the US to implement further sanctions on senior individuals within the regime of President Alexander Lukashenko.
  • The Belarusian leader has met with Russian President Vladimir Putin several times in recent months, committing his gov't to fulfilling its financial obligations to Moscow.
  • Keeping Lukashenko in power in Belarus remains an important strategic objective for the Kremlin, with a pro-Russian leader in Minsk allowing for Belarus to sit as a buffer state between Russia and the EU. Joint military drills and the deployment of Russian troops in Belarus signals a solidification of this stance by the Kremlin.
