Tax Revenue Beats Estimates, Court Rejects Mapisa-Nqakula's Bid To Block Her Arrest

  • The court rejected Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula's bid to interdict her arrest and she can now be detained as part of an ongoing corruption and money-laundering probe, in which she faces charges amounting to ZAR4bn. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said that "the wheels of justice will now be in motion."
  • Former President Jacob Zuma's MK Party argued that the Electoral Commission (IEC) "prejudged" its leader's case when it banned him from running in the upcoming elections and pledged to appeal the decision in court, with the verdict expected before the publication of final candidate lists on April 10.
  • The South African Revenue Service (SARS) reported better-than-expected tax collections for the fiscal year through March 31. The SARS collected ZAR1.741tn, which was about ZAR10bn more than projected in the February budget.
