Thai Meeting With Myanmar Creates ASEAN Tensions

The military-aligned caretaker Thai government has held an informal meeting with some ASEAN countries, Myanmar, China and India regarding the situation in Myanmar. The Thai foreign minister has said that the discussion saw “some progress” on issues including borders and crime. Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia didn’t attend.

  • Indonesia voiced its frustration that Thailand had organised this meeting, as it currently has a caretaker government and the decision could cause political tensions, ASEAN has decided not to include Myanmar and as the ASEAN chair Indonesia should be the one organising such meetings and it had not been consulted. Thailand countered that it should lead policy in this area given its history with Myanmar and its reliance on its oil and gas.
