Thailand Launches Samui Plus, Economic Officials Set To Speak

Spot USD/THB continues to operate just shy of its recent cycle high (THB32.728) printed on Jul 9. The rate reopened on a marginally softer footing today and last changes hands -0.045 at THB32.630. Further losses past Jul 13 low of THB32.540 would open up the 38.2% retracement of the Jun 11 - Jul 9 rally/Jul 6 low at THB32.079/32.067. Meanwhile, a move through the aforementioned THB32.728 level would shift focus to Apr 14, 2020 high of THB32.792.

  • Several media outlets reported that Thailand considers a temporary ban on exports of locally manufactured AstraZeneca jabs, as the country seeks to accelerate its own inoculation drive. That said, the Bangkok Post reported that Thailand reported that an unspecified proportion of vaccines will be set aside for export.
  • Thailand is set to proceed with reopening Koh Samui under the "Samui Plus" project, based on the Phuket Sandbox. PM Prayuth will launch Samui Plus this evening, although the first flights with tourists from Bangkok will arrive on Friday.
  • BoT Asst Gov Thanyanit Niyomkarn holds a briefing on the household-debt problem at 1000ICT/0400BST, with World Bank briefing on its "Thailand Economic Monitor: The Road to Recovery" due at the same time. At 1320ICT/0720BST, Dep PM Supattanapong Punmeechaow will speak on measures to boost the economy.
