ECB: The FT and Handelsblatt newspapers are both picking up the fact that the
in-trouble furniture maker could become the first corporate issuer to create a
loss in the ECB's CSPP.
- According to the ECB website, the Finnish central bank owns Steinhoff Europe
1.875% Jan-25. There is no information on the size purchased.
- When buying corporate debt, the ECB must have expected some defaults but this
comes just a few days before the ECB will be making decisions regarding the
share of corporate bonds to buy from the start of 2018. It is unlikely that one
possible default would unduly influence that decision because Steinhoff's
problems relate to an accounting scandal, which does not necessarily presage
more defaults at other firms.
