UK: The UK parliament is about to sit for the first time since the 12 December
general election, with proceedings due to start in the coming minutes.
- Today MPs will elect the Speaker (almost certainly Sir Lindsay Hoyle, who was
elected Speaker on the last day of the previous parliament) and be sworn in to
office.
- The primary focus will be on the end of the week, with Queen Elizabeth II to
deliver her Queen's Speech - outlining gov't policy for the coming parliament -
at a stripped-back state opening of parliament on Thursday.
- Then on Friday, MPs are due to vote on the Withdrawal Agreement Bill that will
pave the way for the UK to leave the EU by 31 January.
