ToI: White House Believes Netanyahu Lost Control Of His Coalition

ISRAEL

The Times of Israel runs a source report suggesting that the White House thinks that Benjamin Netanyahu has lost control over his coalition amid signs that his far-right allies are exerting increasing influence on government policy.

  • Biden administration officials reportedly told the ToI that moves to expand West Bank settlements at the cost of relations with Saudi Arabia and the decision to press ahead with the contentions judicial overhaul convinced Washington that Netanyahu is no longer in control of his coalition.
  • The Times of Israel cited an anonymous US official as noting that “Bibi’s told us that he doesn’t even really care that much about judicial reform, and what he really wants is a [normalization] deal with Saudi Arabia and to prevent a nuclear Iran, but all these things indicate otherwise.”
  • In an interview for the Jerusalem Post yesterday, Netanyahu insisted that Israel's ties with the US are "as strong as ever," despite obvious signs of tensions between himself and US President Joe Biden. The POTUS has not yet invited the Israeli Prime Minister to the White House and has openly criticised his planned judicial reforms.
