Top Four Candidates Locked In Tight Race For Auckland Mayor

NEW ZEALAND

The top four candidates to become the next Mayor of Auckland have virtually the same level of support, the first public poll circulated by NZ Herald showed.

  • The poll was conducted by Auckland Ratepayers' Alliance/Curia between June 1 - 12 on a sample of 500 respondents.
  • Note that the Ratepayers' Alliance is a lobby group associated with the right wing of the local political scene.
  • The Alliance's spokesman noted that the four leading candidates are equally uninspiring and called on the National Party "to get off the fence" and endorse a candidate for change.
  • NZ Herald reports that "one Labour Party source said the poll is bad news for Collins because if momentum builds around one of the centre-right candidates he will lose."
  • Auckland mayoral election will be held on 8 October 2022 as part of New Zealand's 2022 local elections.
