Trade Min: We Want Good Deal w/ EU, Canada-Style Deal Can Be Done

International Trade Secretary Liz Truss says that progress is being made on a trade deal between the UK and the EU, and that the UK gov't wants a good deal.

  • Echoing comments from other ministers, Truss says that the gov't wants a Canada-style deal, but if that is not possible the UK can go to an Australia-style deal [which would be significantly thinner than a Canada deal, closer to WTO terms].
  • Truss' comments come after the official signing of a trade deal with Japan. The deal was agreed some time ago, with today simply the ceremony surrounding the conclusion of the agreement. The FTA with Japan is the first bilateral trade deal the UK has concluded in over 40 years since it joined the EU (then the European Community) in 1973.
