Trans-Saharan Pipeline Plans Potentially Revived

The energy ministers of Algeria, Niger and Nigeria pledged this week to accelerate work on the development of a Trans-Saharan gas pipeline according to Algeria's state news agency APS.

  • The Trans-Saharan gas pipeline is designed to carry 30 Bcm/year of gas to the European market.
  • Algeria and Nigeria signed an MOU for the pipeline development in 2002 but it made limited progress but the current energy crisis and the need for Europe to move away from Russian fossil fuels has revived plans for the pipe.
