US
US: Treas Sec Mnuchin in an interview on CNBC just concluded ... Covered several
issues including Fed policy and Tsy market functioning. He said:
- White House is close to deal with Congress on a Coronavirus relief bill. This
is the "2nd inning" of the game, with the 1st being the $8bln response package
last week; next inning could be on airlines relief as seen in 9/11.
- In constant contact with Fed's Powell (says Fed and Treasury working together
to provide "unlimited liquidity"), will do everything we can to keep markets
open. Notes there have been issues with Off the Run Tsys and Commercial Paper
market, "we're looking at that".
- Tsy and Fed looking at a range of options. Treasury will seek permission from
Congress to get authority to do things Tsy thinks they need. Should be no stigma
for Banks for using the Discount Window.
- Looking at suspending student loan debt payments (part of a list of 50 items
they are bringing to the President).
- Tariff rollbacks not being considered, possible exemptions for
Coronavirus-related imports.
