Trend In President Biden's Approval Appears Ominous Ahead Of Midterms

US

The Cook Political Report of the UVA Center for Politics has released a report detailing a clear downward trend in President Joe Biden's approval which began almost immediately upon assuming the presidency in 2021.

  • CFP: "Given the consistent downward trend in the president’s numbers, Democrats probably shouldn’t count on rapid positive movement, at least not in time for November. With that, in order to salvage their prospects in the midterms, Democrats will have to run markedly ahead of Biden’s approval rating."
  • This suggest that Biden's approval rating was already structurally unsound and not merely sunk by geopolitical factors, inflation, and high energy prices.
  • If this is the case, the key question ahead of the midterms is whether frontline Democrats will be punished at the ballot box for the perceived poor performance by Democrats at the national level.
  • CFP suggests that some key Democrats are managing to avoid negative associations: "Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) taking 54% against Republican nominee Herschel Walker as Biden’s approval rating in Georgia was a rough 33/60 spread."
  • "Gov. Tony Evers (D-WI) running several points head of his potential opponents [in Wisconsin], while the Senate contest continues to look competitive. Meanwhile, Biden was 17 points underwater in the state."
  • Ron Brownstein of CNN: "Democrats may be able to sustain that dynamic nationally, but the forces of political gravity are strong. The president’s weak approval ratings in some marginal districts across the country have also enabled Republicans to expand the House playing field."
