Troll Granted Highest Ever Production Quota

NATURAL GAS

The Norwegian petroleum and energy ministry has granted the highest ever gas production permit for the Troll field in gas year 2023-24 of 40.47bn m³ according to Argus. This is an increase on the previous highest ever in gas year 2022-23 of 38.5bn m³.

  • Despite the increase, production from Troll may not significantly rise after output exceeded the quota in the past two gas years.
  • The quota for the Oseberg, Oseberg Sor and Oseberg Ost fields will remain unchanged in 2023-24 at 7bn m³.
  • Flexible production allows for over or underproduction in each gas year, with any difference rolled forward to future quotas. Troll production in the 2020-21 exceeded the quota by 862mn m³ and 2021-22 by 2.5bn m³.
  • Troll production in the first nine months of this gas year of 30.19bn m³ is roughly in line with the quota considering current capacity restrictions due to seasonal maintenance. Production is scheduled to restart on 7 September.
  • Production at Oseberg is expected to undershoot the quota this year possibly to balance out earlier overproduction, having totalled 4.27bn m³ in Oct -Jun.
