The Republican Steering Committee recommended yesterday that Rep Brian Mast (R-FL) chair the House Foreign Affairs Committee and Rep Brett Guthrie (R-KY) chair the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The appointments will install two allies of President-elect Donald Trump to Congressional positions instrumental to Trump's agenda.
- Axios notes that Mast is closer to Trump's stance on Ukraine aid than the two more institutionally minded reps who contested the position and will replace term-limited committee chair Rep Michael McCaul (R-TX) - a staunch Ukraine advocate.
- E&E News notes that Guthrie, “pledged to focus on “energy dominance” in leading the panel and plans to push permitting reform and climate rollbacks in the next Congress."
- Guthrie said in a statement: “I am humbled and excited to get to work next Congress to deliver on President Trump and House Republicans’ America First agenda. We must work together to restore America’s energy dominance and lower energy prices.” Punchbowl News notes: "On energy, the Kentucky Republican’s priorities include permitting reform and repealing EV mandates.”
- Under Guthrie, the energy committee will play a central role in the formation of the GOP’s first filibuster-proof reconciliation package, which will focus on energy and border security. Axios reports that incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said yesterday that he is “actively seeking ways to make next year's energy and border package deficit-neutral, if not deficit-negative," with sources saying that the budget reconciliation bill could cost, "as much as $120 billion."
