Trump Maintains Lead Over Haley In New Hampshire

US

A new survey from Suffolk University/NBC10 Boston/Boston Globe has found that former President Donald Trump is holding onto his sizeable lead over Nikki Haley in New Hampshire… but Haley continues to close the gap.”

  • NBC Boston writes: “Trump holding steady at 50%, while Haley jumped two percentage points to 36%.”
  • The New Hampshire primary is the second event of the presidential nominating process with the prevailing wisdom suggesting that another strong Trump showing could effectively end the nomination race.
  • Following his decisive win in Iowa, Trump’s campaign appears to be strengthening control over the Republican Party, issuing new threats to House Freedom Caucus Chair Bob Good (R-VA) for endorsing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL).
  • Axios notes: “Anyone who endorsed a rival candidate before the Iowa caucuses is now a prime target for retribution…. It's the latest sign that loyalty — not ideology, given that Good is one of the most conservative Republicans in the House — is the organizing principle of Trumpism.”
  • Trump’s strategy of primarying Republican lawmakers who opposed him in the 2022 midterms was widely seen as leading to weak candidate quality and an underperformance at the ballot box.
  • Following a similar playbook risks the same outcome in 2024 as strongly pro-Trump Republican candidates may perform strongly in primaries but lack the electability of more moderate GOP candidates in the general election.
