RUSSIA: Trump-Putin Phone Call Remains at Forefront of Local News Flow

RUSSIA
  • The phone call held yesterday between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladmir Putin continues to dominate domestic news flow. Putin's press secretary Dmitry Peskov said Putin invited Trump to Moscow for talks, including on a possible resolution to the war in Ukraine, while the leaders also discussed the crisis in the Middle East, Iran's nuclear program and bilateral relations.
  • Our Political Risk team note that such talks on Ukraine would mark the most concrete move towards an eventual conclusion of the war since the short-lived peace talks that took place in Feb-Mar 2022 in the immediate aftermath of the outbreak of the war. There has been significant speculation regarding the prospect of Trump's 'peace plan' for Ukraine being presented, or at least outlined by Trump's envoy Keith Kellogg, at the Munich Security Conference starting Friday.
  • The Gas of Russia 2025 Forum, organised by the Russian Gas Society, starts in Moscow today. Meanwhile, the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs holds an international business forum.
  • There are no major data releases scheduled for today, with focus turning to the CBR rate decision and CPI data for January due tomorrow. Our full preview for the former, with a summary of sell-side analyst views, will be released later today.
