US President Donald Trump has posted on the Truth Social platform on US-Iran relations. Trump: "I want Iran to be a great and successful Country, but one that cannot have a Nuclear Weapon. Reports that the United States, working in conjunction with Israel, is going to blow Iran into smithereens,” ARE GREATLY EXAGGERATED. I would much prefer a Verified Nuclear Peace Agreement, which will let Iran peacefully grow and prosper. We should start working on it immediately, [...]"
- On 4 Feb Trump issued a presidential memorandum restoring 'maximum pressure' on Iran that includes 'sanctioning or imposing enforcement mechanisms on those acting in violation of existing sanctions'. At the signing in the Oval Office, Trump said that he had left instructions for advisers that in the event of his assassination by Iran the country be 'obliterated'. Following his election in Nov 2024, the Justice Dep't disclosed details of an Iranian murder-for-hire plot against Trump.
- Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi indicated that talks with the Trump administration were possible, saying after a cabinet meeting in Tehran "If the main concern is that Iran does not seek nuclear weapons, then that is achievable,"
- With regards to regional and market impacts, the propensity of both the US and Iran to rapidly shift from aggressive rhetoric to signalling willingness to talk will limit the prospect of a sustained decline in tensions, at least in the short term.
- Trump's well-publicised comments regarding the future of the Gaza Strip could complicate any nascent efforts at talks.
