Turkey-Greece East Med Talks Resume Ahead of EU Summit

  • Turkey, Greece hold 62nd round of exploratory talks in Athens today focused on resolving bilateral disputes in the Aegean & East Med.
  • Comes after Erdogan said Turkey's position had not changed on the East Med yesterday and Turkey would not step back from it.
  • Key issues: Turkey pushing for demilitarisation of certain Greek islands in disputed Grey Zones, hydrocarbon exploration, Possibly the cyprus issue (but may be saved for the UN meeting) and the demarcation of maritime zones within the EEZ
  • Turkey holds joint military drills with the US in the East Med yesterday just south of Rhodes ahead of exploratory talks today. The exercise is expected to be expanded with more Turkish aircraft and frigates on 18 March
