Turkey Remains Opposed To NATO Membership For Sweden & Finland

Turkey's talks with delegations sent by Sweden and Finland did not bring the expected progress, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters during his visit to Azerbaijan.

  • "As long as Tayyip Erdogan is the head of the Republic of Turkiye, we cannot say 'yes' to the countries supporting terrorism to join NATO," the President said according to remarks published by his office.
  • Erdogan also warned that Turkey could launch a military operation against Kurdish militants in Syria without prior notice and without U.S. consent. Turkish media cited him as noting that "one cannot fight terrorism while waiting for permission of whoever."
  • Turkey has been refusing to back NATO membership bids of Sweden and Finland, which require unanimous approval of member states to be successful.
