Turkey Unlikely to Signal Readiness to Approve Sweden NATO Bid

  • Turkey is unlikely to signal it’s ready to approve Sweden’s bid to join NATO when both sides meet on Wednesday, Bloomberg report, despite the Nordic country’s hopes that a recent strict anti-terror law would persuade Ankara it’s cracking down on Kurdish militants. Ankara still wants Sweden to do more to comply with its conditions to sign off on its membership, according to people familiar with the matter.
  • Turkey's retail sales rose 27.5% y/y in April versus a revised +28.8% in March, according to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute. The monthly figure rose 0.9% versus +7% in March.
  • Sozcu report that the credit appetite of the banking sector is falling, with some banks capping the maturity of loans over TRY70,000 to 9-months amid the interest rate on consumer loans reaching around 60%.
  • The minimum wage commission will meet in Ankara ahead of a decision on an interim wage hike. Hurriyet reported yesterday that the public expectation is that the minimum wage will be increased to TRY11000 from TRY8506.
