TWD Best Performer In Asia

TAIWAN

The Taiwanese dollar is the best performing currency in Asia today, USD/TWD dragged lower by a weaker greenback and holding below the key 28 handle as traders are buoyed by positive sentiment in the region.

  • Taiwan has just been included on the currency manipulator watchlist by the US Treasury, which will likely give the Taiwanese central bank pause for thought on any significant intervention.
  • Forex reserves rose in Taiwan in December, latest data shows, which supports the theory that the central bank will take more of a hands off approach to the currency. Reserves rose by $16.51bn to $529.91bn.
  • The US earlier said it would hold talks with Taiwan on political and military cooperation, 2 months after the first US-Taiwan Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue was held in Washington
  • Markets await the release of December CPI figures at 0800GMT/1600CST. Expectations are for the headline figure to rise 0.1%, which would be the second month of gains and a welcome return to inflation after the longest run of declining prices in over a decade.
