U.S. Redeploys Aircraft Carrier Strike Group To East Sea

The U.S. will deploy its nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan to the East Sea following the latest IRBM launch by North Korea, Yonhap News reports citing South Korean military command.

  • The USS Ronald Reagan strike group took part in joint U.S.-South Korean naval exercise last week in its first visit to the Korean peninsula in almost four years.
  • The ship is effectively a floating airbase hosting 90 aircraft and 5,000 military personnel. Its return marks a show of readiness to respond to further provocations by North Korea.
  • It is "very" unusual for the U.S. to redeploy the aircraft carrier so soon after concluding a drill.
