U.S. Treasury Will Not Permit USD Debt Payments To Be Made From Russian Accounts

Wires running comments from U.S. Treasury spokesperson noting that the U.S. will not permit any dollar debt payments to be made from Russian government accounts at U.S. financial institutions.

  • This comes after a source told Reuters that Russia's sovereign bond coupon payments did not receive authorisation from U.S. Treasury to be processed by JP Morgan. Previously, coupon payments on sovereign bonds had been processed.
  • Note that Russia was facing a deadline for more than $600mn bond payments on Monday. This included $552mn on a 2022 bond repayment and a $84mn coupon payment for a 2042 bond.
