UAE To Open Entry Points w/Qatar Following GCC Detente

MIDEAST

Following the GCC Summit held earlier this week, the UAE has announced that it will open all entry points with Qatar following three years of a Saudi-led blockage of the country.

  • The blockade of Qatar, implemented by a number of GCC states in 2017, came as a result of Qatar's close relationship with Saudi Arabia's regional antagonist Iran, Doha's support for the Muslim Brotherhood organisation (viewed as a terrorist group in a number of MENA state), and the perceived anti-Saudi line taken by certain Qatari media.
  • Saudi Arabia opened its borders with Qatar on Monday, and the UAE is set to follow suit on Saturday with air and sea links resumed between the two.
  • UAE Foreign Minister Anwar Gargash stated on Thursday that while the reopening of borders may be swift, other areas in relation to the blockade may take some time to be removed, saying ""The return of movement [of people] and trade between the two countries... will be within a week of the signing [...] Some issues are easier to fix and some others will take a longer time. [...] We have a very good start... but we have issues with rebuilding trust."
