UK: Cabinet To Meet At 1600BST w/Snap Election & Reshuffle Rumours Flying

UK

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has convened a Cabinet meeting for 1600BST (1100ET, 1700CET), with now-rampant speculation among political pundits that he will either call a snap general election for July, officially set the election date for Oct-Nov, or announce a Cabinet reshuffle to remove those MPs from office who are not standing again at the next election.

  • Tim Shipman at the Sunday Times posts on X: "Ministers have been told to attend cabinet at 4pm on pain of death. They have not been told what they will be discussing. Today is the final day the election could be called for June 27."
  • Thursday 23 May marks the release of quarterly immigration statistics. Press Gazette notes, that the figures "are predicted to show a fall in net migration, which Migration Advisory Committee chair Brian Bell this week ascribed to a ban on foreign students bringing family members to the UK, igniting a row with business leaders over the impact on the university sector and the UK’s skills base."
  • YouGov's latest polling shows immigration seen as the third-most important issue (and rising) facing the UK behind the economy and the healthcare sector. Even if migration stats are expected to decline, it could prove a sizeable gamble from the PM to do so with the risk of the first day of the campaign being dominated by a shock increase in net migration.
