UK Crown Estate, GB Energy to Boost Wind Expansion

POWER

The Crown Estate and GB Energy will partner to expand the country’s offshore wind expansion, it said on Thursday.

  • “Investing in clean power is the route to end the UK’s energy insecurity, and Great British Energy will be essential in this mission,” Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary Ed Miliband said.
  • “The first test of GB Energy and its partnership with the Crown Estate will be in this year’s CfD auction,” said Sam Hollister, head of energy economics, policy and investment at consultants LCP Delta.
  • “With zero offshore wind procured last year, the industry and the UK’s decarbonization ambitions are playing catch-up,” Hollister added.
  • LCP Delta estimated that the UK most add 15GW of offshore wind capacity in the next two auctions to reach the 55GW target.
  • GB Energy will receive £8.4bn of taxpayer’s money to own and operate renewable assets in collaboration with the private sector to shift away from fossil fuels.
