ELECTRICITY: UK, Netherlands Progress on LionLink Interconnector

ELECTRICITY

The UK and the Netherlands are planned to connect grids via the LionLink direct-current hybrid interconnector via the Nederwiek 3 offshore wind farm according to offshoreWind.biz.

  • The Dutch Climate and Green Growth Minister Sophie Hermans has included LionLink in the country’s latest Offshore Wind Energy Development Framework. This means TenneT and National Grid Ventures can now make investments in the project.
  • The interconnector can also be used as an additional high-voltage link to exchange electricity between the countries.
  • The LionLink project was launched in April 2023.
  • Before realisation of the power link, the Dutch ministry still needs to take a decision on the market design for wind farm developers in the tender procedure for Nederwiek 3, TenneT said previously.
  • New arrangements for market coupling between the EU and the UK are needed for the effective operation of the new interconnector, TenneT added.
  • The tender for the Nederwiek 3 offshore wind farm is planned to be launched in 2026. The Dutch government will also award the Nederwiek 2 site and likely the delayed the Nederwiek 1B site.
