MNI BRIEF: US Treasury Lowers Q1 Borrowing Estimate By $9B

MNI (WASHINGTON) - The U.S. Treasury Department on Monday announced it expects to borrow USD815 billion in privately held net marketable debt in the first quarter, USD9 billion less than previously announced in October due to a higher cash balance. Officials expect to borrow USD123 billion in the second quarter.

Treasury is assuming an end of quarter cash balance of USD850 billion in March and June. During the fourth quarter of 2024 Treasury borrowed USD620 billion and ended the year with USD722 billion of cash on hand. The Treasury's quarterly refunding will be released at 8:30 a.m. February 5.
