UK: PM To Deliver Conference Speech @1400BST

UK

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will deliver his speech to the Labour party conference at around 1400BST (0900ET, 1500CET). Livestream can be found here. The address  will act as a platform for Starmer to set out his view of what he wants his gov't to achieve over the coming year. As the BBC notes, the speech will be a tone-setter as "Plenty within the government have concluded that they have perhaps overdone the doom and gloom in the language they have been using, and so they have started to use words loaded with a bit of sunshine, but not too much."

  • Focus is already on the 30 Oct Budget presentation from Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves, with tax hikes expected amid what the gov't claims is a GBP22bn 'black hole' in UK finances and following generous pay awards to public sector and railway workers.
  • Moreover, the fallout from summer riots, the early release of prisoners, and a scandal involving party donors providing clothes and event tickets to senior Labour figures gives the PM a difficult task in crystalising a clear policy direction for the gov't after a period of very public setbacks.
  • With the PM set to speak at UN General Assembly plenary tomorrow, Starmer's conference speech will focus on domestic policy. Nevertheless, foreign policy issues loom over Starmer's address with Defence Secretary John Healey leaving the conference early to chair an emergency COBRA meeting regarding the situation in the Middle East.
