UK PM To Visit Sweden, Finland Tomorrow As Membership Speculation Mounts

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to visit both Sweden and Finland tomorrow, as anticipation mounts that the countries will launch joint or simultaneous bids to join the Western alliance as soon as the June NATO leaders' summit taking place in Madrid.

  • Yesterday it was confirmed that Sweden's governing Social Democrats will hold a vote on 15 May on whether to officially back NATO accession. The vote is seen as something of a foregone conclusion, with even dovish Social Democrats such as former Foriegn Secretary Jan Eliasson coming out in favour of Sweden joining NATO.
  • UK seen as a major supporter of both nations joining the alliance. Last week, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said that it was 'inconceviable' that the UK would not defend either nation if they were attacked by Russia for seeking to join NATO, even if they were not full members by that point.
