UK: Two right wing candidates left in Conservative party race

UK
  • In a shock result, James Cleverly has been knocked out of the Conservative party leadership race. Cleverly had been the favourite after yesterday's vote which narrowed the race from four to three, with Cleverly obtaining 37 votes today, two fewer than when he topped the voting yesterday.
  • Cleverly was from the centrist side of the party, and all of the talk today had been which of the more right-leaning candidates would be in the final two with him. Badenoch increased from 30 votes yesterday to 42 today (+12 votes) while Jenrick had 41 votes today, up from 31 yesterday (+10).
  • Party members (as opposed to MPs) will now have until 31 October to vote for either Badenoch or Jenrick (assuming neither drop out of the race) with the new leader announced on 2 November – three days after the Budget.
  • Badenoch had been polling as the favourite among party members for some time, but Conservative leadership races over previous years have taken many twists and turns so there is still uncertainty here.
  • However, what is clear is that the Conservative party will likely gravitate a bit further to the right.
