UKRAINE: Blinken Confirms Biden Approved Kyiv Using US Weapons Against Russia

UKRAINE

Speaking at an informal meeting of NATO foreign ministers in the Czech capital, Prague, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirms the overnight report that President Joe Biden has personally approved the use of US-supplied weapons against the territory of the Russian Federation by Ukrainian forces. Blinken says the approval came following a request from Kyiv.

  • Says that "Russia has been intensifying its attacks against frontline [NATO] states", and that the upcoming NATO summit in Washington "is more important than ever at this pivotal time".
  • Says that at the summit, "we will be taking concrete steps to bring Ukraine closer to NATO [and] ensure there's a bridge for Ukraine to NATO membership".
  • Blinken: The US "wants to make sure it is proceeding deliberately as well as effectively when it comes to its support for Ukraine." Following the US' approval, Germany has also confirmed it has given permission to Ukraine to use weapons it has supplied against Russian territory around the area of Kharkiv, where Russian forces have made recent territorial gainst close to the border of Russia's Belgorod oblast.
  • As we noted earlier (see 'RUSSIA: Medvedev-Russia 'Not Bluffing' On Use Of Tactical Nukes', 0942BST) the rhetoric around the risk of nuclear escalation emanating from Putin allies has grown louder in the past 24 hours, potentially indicating greater concern within the Russian leadership about the impact of the US decision.
