Ukraine Could Have Blackouts Over Most of Winter

POWER

Blackouts during the winter in Ukraine could occur over the vast majority of the days due to the large amount of power infrastructure destroyed by Russian missiles, according to Kyiv Independent, cited by Bloomberg.

  • The damage is so extensive that Ukrainians should be preparing for "life in the cold and the dark," one official told the FT.
  • About 1.2GW of power generation was lost in Saturday’s bombardment alone, according to one official, with infrastructure for transferring and storing gas in western Ukraine damaged.
  • On 1 June, two hydroelectric power stations and two thermal power plants were hit during massive Russian attacks – lowering generational capacity.
  • Ukrainian power imports for neighbouring EU countries have been climbing to all-time highs recently due to the loss of power plants.
  • The government is currently in talks to increase its import capacity to about 2.2GW in winter from 1.7GW now.
