NATGAS: Ukraine Plans 800mcm of Gas Imports from EU in February & March

NATGAS

Ukraine plans to import up to 800mcm of gas from Europe in February and March as production sometimes falls 40% after Russian missile strikes, according to a Reuters source.

  • Ukrainian gas imports from Europe are up ten-fold to over 20mcm/d since the start of February after numerous attacks by Russia on its energy infrastructure and gas fields in recent weeks.
  • Ukraine’s Naftogaz and DTEK have said facilities have been damaged but Russian attacks at least twice so far in February.
  • Ukraine consumed between 110 and 140 mcm/d in winter compared to production of 52mcm/d before the strike with the difference filled from gas storage withdrawals.
  • "We could do without imports this heating season, but the attacks on production are forcing us to import gas to compensate for this reduction in domestic production," a source said.
  • Planned imports and domestic gas production will cover the remaining heating season without restrictions on industry and households despite low storage reserves, the source added.
  • GIE shows Urkaine gas storage down at just 7.07% full, or 22.56 TWh on Feb. 19.
