Following on from reports of a call between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Russian President Vladimir Putin, a German gov't spox has said that during the call Scholz "urged Russia to show a willingness to negotiate with Ukraine with the aim of a just and lasting peace," as well as demanding the withdrawal of Russian troops. Spox says Scholz "stressed the unbreakable resolve of Germany to support Ukraine in the war with Russia as long as possible". The spox confirms that Scholz spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy before the call, and intends to do so afterwards as well. Russian media has acknowledged German reports of the call, but has not commented yet.
- The call comes a day after the EU confirmed for the first time that it has funded member states' joint procurement of arms for Ukraine. The Guardian: "The European Commission vice-president Margrethe Vestager said the EU was investing €300 million to help groups of up to nine member countries buy air defence systems, armoured vehicles and artillery ammunition. “Importantly, the selected projects will also increase our support to Ukraine with additional defence equipment.”
