UMNO Leaders Express Solidarity As Najib Arrives At Prison

UMNO leaders came forward to express solidarity with former Prime Minister Najib after he lost the final appeal in a trial related to the 1MDB scandal and was sent to prison.

  • The top brass of Malaysia's largest party used social media to support Najib, who arrived at the Kajang Prison Tuesday evening. UMNO President Zahid said that the party "will stand by Najib," adding that its political bureau would convene soon.
  • Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri said "party members are free to give their opinions" but he remains focused on running the country.
  • Malaysiakini reports that Najib has 14 days to apply for a pardon or else he will lose his status as Pekan MP. He still has dozens of other pending criminal trials.
