Uncertainty Hangs Over PM Vote

THAILAND

The main focus today will on the PM vote. Thailand's 750 lawmakers start debating at 9:30am local time, with votes set for 5pm. Protests at parliament are also scheduled for 3pm local time.

  • This comes as main PM candidate Pita's eligibility remains uncertain after the Thai Electoral Commission applied to the Constitutional Court yesterday seeking Pita's disqualification. This was due to Pita owning media shares when he applied to run for public office (which is prohibited in Thailand).
  • It's unclear when the Constitutional Court will make a ruling (assuming it accepts the case).
  • If Pita fails today, parliament may return on the 19th of July for another vote (assuming is he isn't disqualified).
