MIDEAST: Unconfirmed reports that political deputy at the Iranian Ministry of
Foreign Affairs Abbas Araghchi has stated at the Tehran Dialogue Forum that Iran
is "ready to come back to full compliance" with the JCPOA nuclear deal agreed
with the P5+1 group.
- Since the US's withdrawal in May 2018, Iran has ramped up its nuclear
enrichment programme, in breach of the JCPOA's conditions.
- Statement could be seen as an attempt to drive a wedge between US and its P5+1
counterparts. The European nations in the group (Germany, France, UK) have been
less than effusive in support for the US assassination of senior Iranian General
Qassem Soleimani.
- Gov'ts of all three remain committed to JCPOA, and may see Iranian return to
compliance as a reason to seek to de-escalate situation with Tehran, rather than
support US's hardline stance.
