US

US President Joe Biden, speaking publicly for the first time since the general election, says he spoke with Presdient-Elect Donald Trump to congratulate him on his victory and "assured him" that he would direct his "entire administration" to work with Trump's team to ensure a "peaceful and orderly transition."

  • Biden says: "The people vote and choose their own leaders, and they do it peacefully. And we're in a democracy... the will of the people always prevails."
  • Biden said he also spoke with Vice President Kamala Harris and noted that her team should be proud of the campaign they ran.
  • Biden says, "We accept the choice the country made," and makes a call for unity: "To see each other not as adversaries, but as fellow Americans. Bring down the temperature."
  • Biden adds that he will "do his duty as president" on January 20 to ensure a peaceful transfer of power. He says that the majority of the achievements of his administration will not be felt now but over the course of the next decade: "We're leaving behind the strongest economy in the world."
  • Biden says: "We have 74 days to finish the term. Let's make every day count. That's the responsibility we have to the American people."
