US Concerned About Russia/Hungary Ties

The US is concerned about Hungary’s relationship with Russia according to the US Embassy in Budapest Friday.

  • It comes after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban met Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Belt and Road forum in Beijing this week.
  • The leaders confirmed their commitment to bilateral ties despite intense EU sanctions on Russia after the invasion of Ukraine.
  • They discussed bilateral cooperation in natural gas and crude oil transportation as well as nuclear energy according to official reports.
  • "The United States is concerned about Hungary’s relationship with Russia," U.S. Ambassador to Hungary David Pressman said in a statement.
  • The EU was forced to give temporary concessions to Hungary allowing it to continue importing Russian oil and gas it claims it is unable to replace in the short-term.
  • Orban became the first EU member state leader to meet Putin in person since the invasion of Ukraine February 2022.
