US Denies "Irresponsible Claims" Of US/Israeli Involvement In Iran Attack

SECURITY

US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller, briefing reporters in Washington, has denied that the US was involved in today's terrorist attack in Iran which killed over 100 people at the grave site of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani.

  • Miller: "Number 1, the United States was not involved in any way and the suggestion to the contrary is ridiculous. And number two: We have no reason to believe that Israel was involved in this explosion."
  • On yesterday's drone strike in Beirut, Lebanon, widely believed to have been conducted by Israeli forces, which killed a top Hamas official, Miller says: "I don't have an assessment to make about who was responsible for that incident. I'll leave it to the government of Israel to speak to their actions." Responding to a later question, Miller says the US was not given any advanced notice about the Beirut attack.
  • When asked if either of these incidents could increase regional tensions, Miller says: "We remain incredibly concerned, as we have been from the outset of this conflict, about the risk of the conflict spreading into other fronts, both inside Israel... or outside Israel to other countries in the region."
  • Miller says, "I wouldn't say that our concern is any higher today than it has been from the beginning," Miller adds that he doesn't believe its "in Hezbollah's interests" to expand the conflict.
