US Does Not Support Pakistan-Iran Gas Pipeline

The US said on Tuesday it does not support the Pakistan-Iran natural gas pipeline project, the Peace Pipeline.

  • "We do not support this pipeline going forward," a US State Department spokesperson said.
  • "We always advise everyone that doing business with Iran runs the risk of touching upon and coming in contact with our sanctions, and would advise everyone to consider that very carefully," the spokesperson added.
  • The Pakistan government is ready to submit a draft request to the US administration giving “political and technical” reasons to secure waivers, said Petroleum Minister Musadik Malik. The pipeline project “cannot bear the burden of sanctions,” he said.
  • Pakistan signed a 25-year supply deal with Iran in 2010 but the pipeline has been delayed with Iran threatening legal action.
  • The start of construction of a 80-kilometer link from the Iranian border to the port of Gwadar is to start soon, Malik said.
