SOUTH AFRICA: US Extends S. Africa's Access To AGOA Benefits For 2025
SOUTH AFRICA
- The US left the list of countries enjoying preferential trade access to its markets under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) unchanged, meaning that South Africa will retain access in 2025. South Africa's foreign policy choices, such as closer ties with China and taking Israel to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over its actions in Gaza, have provoked calls from some US lawmakers to reconsider its membership in the scheme. Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau said that the decision, taken shortly before the inauguration of Donald Trump, "provides a good basis to strengthen SA-US relations."
- Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa told reporters that South Africa has now recorded the longest streak of uninterrupted power supply in five years. However, he warned that "we are within touching distance of the resolution of load-shedding but we are not necessarily out of the woods."
- The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) postponed its decision about Eskom’s allowable revenue until the end of January. This comes as NERSA is reviewing Eskom's request for a 36% power tariff hike in 2025.
